My favorite movies (and tv shows) is Star Wars. Its setting is mentioned at the beginning of every movie "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." This is important to the writers of the Star Wars universe, especially when George Lucas first created it, as it allowed him to create whatever he wanted it to. From this, it also gave anyone the ability to tap into their imagination, and lose themselves in the Star Wars universe. In your own imagination you can be fairly limitless in your creativity (with respect to the created universe). Being able to leave your crappy life and completely forgetting about it, then becoming whoever/whatever you want to be in a completely fictional, Sifi universe.
I think the Star Wars Galaxy is one of the most interesting settings in modern media. Like you said, it exists as a setting that is familiar to people who consume Star Wars media, but is also able to sculpted into whatever the current creative team wants it to be. It's an extremely alien setting to our own, but is still instantly recognizable by its design and the tone and themes present throughout most Star Wars stories.
ReplyDeleteI like Star Wars, I am not a super-fan, so if someone tested me on stuff, I would probably fail but I do enjoy it, especially the older movies. Being set in a galaxy far away and having different planets makes the show different than other science fiction shows but still enjoyable to the audience. I think Star Wars is a great example of how important setting is to a show/ movie.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to Star Wars but the real question is Luke or Anikan? That was my favorite debate throughout the series. I really liked the perspective you used when saying Star Wars takes you away from reality and puts in a universe where people fight for the truth and what's right.
